¬¨‚ĆThe source code is currently quite large and the download will be between 1.2 and 1.6 gigs. ¬¨‚ĆI compiled the project in terminal with the following commands.įirst get the source using SVN and then sync with gclient. ¬¨‚ĆTo be able to compile on OS X Lion works but there are a few more steps then other Mac platforms.

I compiled on 10.7 Lion but used set the build option to 10.6 for better compatibility. I compiled Chromium from source on an MacBook Air i5.  I will include this chromium build and future builds on our Lab images at the HS and MS, also changed the logo a bit to give it a Geneseo feel.

Chrome also adds in a PDF plugin as well as built in flash plugin where as Chromium leaves these out,  again this is okay and actually preferred since we already have flash and a PDF view installed on all Macs.

¬¨‚Ć In a filtered setting its nice to have a customized browser, that doesn’t track (as many) user metrics as this information is really just wasted traffic. ¬¨‚ĆChromium does not track as many user metrics, not does it seem to open quite the same number of UDP connections as Chrome. ¬¨‚ĆThe difference is minimal but for a school district there are a couple of slight advantages. ¬¨‚ĆUsually this pace of release is a good thing but in Mozilla’s case it has been frustrating as some versions work well, others have no really new features (Firefox 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10? ¬¨‚Ćall seemed the same, still buggy).Ĭhrome is google’s slightly modified release verision of the open source project Chromium (financed by Google).

¬¨‚ĆMozilla/Firefox’s rapid release schedule has unfortunately turned out to be quite annoying and almost¬¨‚Ćdisastrous¬¨‚Ćwith new browsers being released every six weeks or so. ¬¨‚ĆLet me just say I have been a major fan of Mozilla/Firefox for over a decade and it has only been really the last 12-15 months that I have fully come to appreciate how fast and far the Chormium project has evolved. So Chromium is the best browser, in my opinion. (Can Click Image to Download Installer as well). I placed the Release build in a DMG file to give it an easy installer. 0.0 (131961) – Mac Build for Geneseo District 228 If you go to a PDF, you'll just get a prompt to download it and you can then read it on your machine with Preview, Adobe Reader etc.Chromium – Best Browser – Compiled from Source for Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7Ĭlick Here to Download Chromium for OS X 10.6 and 10.7 Mac Build.

UPDATE regarding PDF support: I forgiot to mention that the browser doesn't support reading PDF files by default. Have fun, I hope this post helps all those holding out on old but still great macOS versions. uBlock Origin runs in that browser (press this link in Arctic Fox only): I have found a browser (Arctic Fox) which still supports OS X 10.6 / 10.7 / 10.8, is frequently updated, and is being supplied with the newest Firefox security updates:Īs the Internet is basically unusable without an adblocker, you're probably going to want one. The same is true for Firefox and Chrome, which stopped support for any macOS version below OS X 10.9 Mavericks long ago. One problem of using an OS X version this old is the browser: The internal Safari wasn't updated in ages, having lots of unpatched security issues. Frequently, people on this sub state that they are still using OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion, or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, either because they like these OS versions or because they are stuck with them as their machines didn't get newer macOS versions from Apple.
